the researchers wrote a simple script that automatically recognized when videos were recorded a certain distance away from a primary location, that being the potential victims' home addresses. When the "vacation distance," as it was called, was set to 100 KM, the script returned 106 hits revealing who was out-of-town in the test location of Berkeley, CA. After briefly perusing the results, the researchers came across a video from someone who was clearly on a Caribbean vacation and would have made an ideal victim.

it seems as if we are gradually getting used to forgetting about these problematic instances and undoubtedly accept the apologetic discursive framing of these events. In the meanwhile, we continue the anticipation of new issues, resulting from intrusive changes enacted by social media corporations in their quest for more openness and connectedness. Arguably, social media users should be able to manage their information preemptively.

Anonymous online speech can be powerful and beneficial. You are free to leave anonymous or pseudonymous comments on this site, which encourages free discussion of political issues. Protesters in Iran can spread ideas, corporate whistleblowers can speak out, and the government is deterred from at least one form of intrusion into personal life. On a personal level, you can explore your identity, research controversial causes or issues, or just vent frustration. All of these are good things and worthy of preservation.
But in the offline world there is also accountability for anonymous speech that is libelous or invasive of privacy. By taking control of the media away from The New York Times and putting it in the hands of individual bloggers, the Internet have empowered free expression and opinion, but also empowered hundreds of millions of people to anonymously libel each other and invade each others’ privacy.

As I’ve said time and time again, people do want to engage in public, but not the same public that includes all of you.
Geweldig (lang!) stuk van danah boyd over Facebook's idee van privacy

With Diaspora, we are reclaiming our data, securing our social connections, and making it easy to share on your own terms. We think we can replace today's centralized social web with a more secure and convenient decentralized network. Diaspora will be easy to use, and it will be centered on you instead of a faceless hub.
Interessant project!

a good interface is meant to help users achieve their goals as easily as possible. But an "evil" interface is meant to trick users into doing things they don't want to. Conti's examples include aggressive pop-up ads, malware that masquerades as anti-virus software, and pre-checked checkboxes for unwanted "special offers".
The new Facebook is full of similarly deceptive interfaces.

The new proposal – which was passed in the House of Lords by 165 votes to 140 – gives a high court judge the right to issue an injunction against a website accused of hosting a "substantial" amount of copyright infringing material, potentially forcing the entire site offline.
